What is the Viewing Angle?

The viewing angle is one of the most important features of a sign. A sign with a wide viewing angle can continue to be view at an extreme angle as the audience drives past. The wider the viewing angle, the longer they have to view your message. When evaluating the location for a new sign, our goal is to make the sign as visible as possible to your audience.

Viewing Angle Specifics

The quality of the image your viewers see is influenced by many factors, not the least of which are the distance between the viewer and the screen, as well as the severity of the angle at which the viewer is positioned while viewing the screen.

As it relates to distance, we know that the ideal viewing distance of a sign is 4.5 x the pixel pitch in feet. For example, a 10mm resolution or pixel pitch screen is ideally viewed head-on from 45 feet away. At that distance, the human eye (or brain) no longer sees individual pixels, but the whole picture. As viewers get closer to the screen, the pixels become more evident, but the image will remain acceptable. The viewing angle is best described as how far a viewer to either side of the screen can move and still see/interpret the image. Signs with a lower viewing angle will become less readable sooner as your audience passes by. Quality signs with an oval diode designed for wide-angle viewing will remain visible/readable/bright longer as the audience passes the sign.
