CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIGN SIZE
Introduction
Selecting the right sign size is essential for maximizing visibility, ensuring effectiveness, and complying with local regulations. This guide will help you understand the key factors to consider when choosing the ideal sign for your business.

RULE #1: “AS BIG AS POSSIBLE”
The larger your sign, the more effective it will be in capturing attention. However, three main factors determine the maximum size you can install:
Zoning Regulations – Local laws set limits on sign size. Checking with your city or municipality will help determine the largest sign legally allowed.
Physical Limitations-The location where your sign will be installed must support its size and weight. Consider available space, mounting options, and environmental conditions.
Budget-While bigger signs tend to be more effective, they also cost more. It’s important to balance impact with affordability.
In some cases, zoning laws may permit a larger sign than your budget or installation site can accommodate. A good sign size will take all three factors into account. With the team of true sign professionals at GRS, you’ll be in good hands!

RULE #2: 10X SQUARE FOOTAGE = MAXIMUM VIEWING DISTANCE
A sign’s visibility is directly related to its size. The general rule is:
A sign’s maximum effective viewing distance is about 10 times its square
Example:
A 32 square foot (4′ x 8′) sign should not be expected to be effective beyond 320 feet.
While your sign may be visible from half a mile away, a massive sign may not be necessary if most viewers will be within 100 feet, such as in a parking lot. Choose a size that aligns with your audience’s typical viewing distance. Your chosen sign size should be easily readable with a variety of messages well inside the maximum noted here.
RULE #3: READABILITY
Traditionally, readability was determined by the height of the text:
1 vertical inch of text is legible at 30 feet (standing still with perfect eyesight).
For example, if most viewers will be 300 feet away, the text should be at least 10 inches tall. However, modern digital signs (Electronic Message Centers, or EMCS) allow for full-color graphics and images, reducing reliance on text.
Modern Application Example:
Years ago, a restaurant might have had a sign that read: “1/4 lb Cheeseburger & Fries with Drink – $6.99” To ensure readability, the text needed to be large. Today, an EMC can instead display:
A high-quality image of a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink
Bold pricing ($6.99)
Minimal text, making the message easier to absorb
